First note from a new corner - why I finally started writing things down.
For years my "system" was a drawer full of loose paper: measurements, shopping lists, the settings for the boiler after the repairman left. Every winter began with the same archaeology. Last month the drawer won - I lost the one note that explained which breaker controls the garden pump - and I decided to move the whole habit into short public entries instead.
So this is entry one, and a promise of sorts. Expect plain notes about repairs that worked (and the ones that did not), small cooking experiments, walks where I noticed something worth keeping. Nothing polished; the point is to write it before the drawer eats it.
The first finding: writing a note forces a kind of honesty that memory avoids. "The pump breaker is somewhere in the middle" becomes useless the moment you need it; "pump = B4, labeled with the green tape" has already saved me twenty minutes this week. Details are the whole game.
If you keep your own drawer of loose paper, consider this your sign to start a ledger too. It costs nothing, and future-you is the most grateful reader you will ever have.
